A brief history of JT

1987	JT was originally developed by the US Company Engineering Animation, Inc. (EAI) under the name Direct-Model toolkit. The models were used e.g. in court to illustrate complex car accidents.
1999	EAI was taken over by UGS and the data format was developed further as JT.
2001	The division of EAI that was involved in the visualization of technically complex legal claims was spun off and today goes by the name of Demonstratives, Inc. (DI).
2003	UGS PLM Solutions established the JT Open initiative to encourage wider use of the technology.
2003	Initiated by specialists of Siemens and Bosch the JT User Group was founded with the aim to provide a platform for sharing experiences relating ti the application of JT.
2007	UGS PLM Solutions submitted an application for the standardization of JT to the ISO.
2007	Shortly after the ISO application UGS was acquired by Siemens Industry Automation and its name was changed to Siemens PLM Software.
2009	The standardization organization decided to bring the evaluation of JT and other formats, including U3D and Collada to a close. JT 8.3c was published as a Publicly Available Specification.
2012	JT based on version 9.5 has been officially published as ISO 14306:2012. All documents needed for the implementation are available royalty free.
