Details

STEP AP 242 provides all the functionalities covered by the AP 203 ed2 and AP 214 ed3. With AP242 it was introduced the usage of XML for product structure and meta data

Relevance and Benefit for MBSE

  • STEP AP242 XML will replace STEP AP203 & AP214 exchange
  • In combination with STEP AP242 or JT for geometry
  • This data format could be also used for data sharing as basis for technologies as OSLC
  • The benefits of using STEP AP242 XML are
    • a CAD/PLM editor independent solution as 3rd party tools exists
    • a solution for exchanging data between different toolsets
    • support of exchanging data across companies borders (supply chain)
    • support of data migration between different releases or even systems

Risks and Impediments

  • Due to customization of PLM systems STEP AP242 XML need to be adopted/mapped
  • Common understanding of rules required (e.g. configuration management, validities/effectivities or naming rules)
