John Dunford RIP

[Anrede] [Nachname],

180 organizations are members of the prostep ivip association. What unites us is the continuous drive for optimization of product development. Product creation as we know it today must completely re-invent itself, for a variety of reasons:

Product Requirements are changing drastically
Technological innovations such as the permanent availability of computing power are driving digitization and therewith customer expectations. Sustainability and urbanization are further trends that change product requirements. The digital networking of products enables new business models and their demand.

Existing Product Development not suited
This is why products that are being newly developed differ substantially in their development goals from their predecessors. Product development however has been perfected to create from an existing product in a similar or identical architecture its successor product. So far, the optimization goal of product development has been „time-to-market“.

Controlling Complexity as Optimization Objective
Short development cycles are still competition-critical, but tackling the increasing complexity is what moves more and more into the foreground.
The established development method is to divide a new product quickly and implicitly into components which are then optimized individually. This kind of development is highly based on the division of labor. When getting to the right side of the V-model, the new complexity exerts its full effect: the function of the individual components is under control. However, the complexity of the functions that need input from diverse components across departments is causing problems.

Solution Concepts are available
Systems Engineering addresses a variety of the described problems: the implicit decomposition of a product is replaced by a strict focus of all functions on customer requirements. On this basis especially digital functions can be developed independently and delivered to product projects (key word: product line engineering).

No One-size-fits-all
Some industries like e.g. aerospace or medical technology are pioneers in some areas. But a general approach which is always meeting its own development targets is still missing. One of the major challenges - in addition to a specific, individually suitable product development – is also the transformation process from the existing into the new working method.

What prostep ivip is all about
What helps in this context is the exchange with others, who are on the same path and work on the same challenges. These partners can be found in the prostep ivip community. Sharing own experiences and the intensive networking in a precompetitive setting helps to achieve a new level of transformation speed.

prostep ivip Scientific Award: We are looking for the winners for 2020!

You are a joung engineer and are working on your master or doctoral thesis on virtual product development? Would you like to present your ideas to representatives of leading manufacturers and IT companies? Then take your chance now!

Papers in German or English are accepted for submission, provided they do not fall under the conditions of secrecy. The jury of the prostep ivip Scientific Award will decide which submissions will receive the Scientific Award. The circle of decision-makers includes Armin Hoffacker, BOSCH (Chairman of the Board), Prof. Dr. Rainer Stark, Fraunhofer IPK, Dr. Henrik Weimer, Airbus and Philipp Wibbing, UNITY.

The prostep ivip Scientific Award will be presented as part of the prostep ivip Symposium 2020 during an official evening event at the ICS in Stuttgart.

Besides the prize money (1.000 € diploma/master thesis or 4.000 € doctoral thesis) we offer the winner in the field of doctoral thesis the possibility to become part of the prostep ivip symposium and to report on the results of the doctoral thesis in front of an audience in the field of the "Scientific Track". A unique chance to leave a lasting impression on the expert audience and thus potential future employers!

The closing date for applications for the Scientific Award 2020 is 31 January 2020!

prostep ivip opens Shop Window to the Far East

Functional safety, traceability, and verification management are topics that move the industry – especially when it comes to the realization of highly automated and autonomous products. Methodically and technologically the focus is increasingly put on model-based systems engineering, particularly by the automotive industry.

In this context, prostep ivip continues to pursue its standardization activities, particularly with projects such as SmartSE, the SysML workflow forum and ReqIF. Of course, there are other players around the world who are active in this field. For this reason the association decided to hold for the first time a conference on this subject in Japan, also underlining its strategic goal of expanding a foothold in Japan.

Thus, the first prostep ivip Systems Engineering Day took place on 17/10/2919 in Tokyo and every seat was taken: interested experts from e.g. Aisin, AVL List, Bosch, DENSO, FUSO, Hino, Honda, Jatco, Mazda, MEIDENSHA, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Nissan, Panasonic, Suzuki, Toshiba, Toyota, Volkswagen and Yamaha ensured a sold-out event long before the actual conference date. Representatives from the Japanese Ministry of Economics METI and from ISO were also among the participants.

The European and Japanese speakers presented innovation and standardization projects currently debated in the community. It was a very successful day which not only promoted content-related exchange but also contributed greatly to networking.

At this point we would also like to express our special thanks to one of our members: without the dedicated support of NTT Data on both the German and Japanese side the first prostep ivip SE Day in Japan would not have been such as success story – ranging from providing the premises to the personal support on site.

Call for project participation: Industry Initiative etami

Ethical and Trustworthy Artificial and Machine Intelligence

With the Ethics Guidelines for Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence, the EU Commission has provided an important document to enhance trust in artificial intelligence applications. Yet the application of these guidelines during the implementation and use of AI-based systems is purely optional and as of today not certifiable. Thus, the objective of the etami project is to close this gap by defining a framework for reviewing the application of these guidelines in future implementations. This encompasses the development of standardised test criteria and procedures as well as building a qualified organisation that can perform conformance tests and certification. Successfully evaluated products and organisations that develop, manufacture, distribute and serve AI-based products will be awarded a certificate or seal of approval and thus gain an internationally recognised competitive advantage.

The etami project will be launched in 2020 and is open to European industry partners.
