Dear [Anrede] [Nachname],

185 organizations are currently members of the prostep ivip association. They often face similar challenges when it comes to the digitization of their business processes. Through pre-competitive exchange and collaborative work on specific topics they have the opportunity to gain valuable insights for their own businesses. This is the potential prostep ivip stands for!
The board of management has set itself the goal of making this value proposition more visible. In this context it is helpful to better understand the diversity of topics addressed by the association.
There are different working groups within the association, dealing with different challenges in the areas of digitization and digital transformation. The largest at this time is the project group Smart Systems Engineering, which has been working for seven years on standardized methods and best practices for model-based development and simulation of cyber-physical systems. The group should be interesting for all members who would like to implement MBSE in their development processes.
However, this is just one of the many topics addressed by the association in various workgroups:

1. The SysML Workflow Forum, which emerged from Smart SE, examines the industrial application potential of the system modelling language SysML, particularly the potential for exchanging SysML models with the help of XMI formats.

2. The ReqIF Workflow Forum focuses on common processes and scenarios for the exchange of requirements by using the ReqIF format.

3. The Vehicle Electric Systems Workflow Forum develops methodical and technical basics to build a logical mockup of the vehicle electric system based on harness description lists and Vehicle Electric Containers (VEC)..

4. The Additive Manufacturing Interface-Initiative (AMI), launched by the SAMPL project, promotes the standardization of interfaces for the secure exchange of 3D print data.

5. The Production Lifecycle Information Management (PLIM) is a relatively new application project, addressing the question how divisions, locations and suppliers can be better integrated for production planning and production.

6. A central role for all association activities plays the Initiative for PLM-Openness, responsible for the implementation of the Code of PLM Openness with users and the certification of suppliers.

As you can see, there are many activities you can take part in. Base your decision on where in your company there is the greatest need for action. The standardization activities of the association are not an end in themselves. They are meant to provide help for self-reliance and to support members in solving problems, which can only be overcome in cooperation with others.
Karl-Heinz Streibich, President of the German Academy of Engineering Sciences (acatech), stated at the last prostep ivip symposium: „We need trusted networks in order to catch up on Germany’s backlog in digitization. The prostep ivip association is a model for such a trusted network, where user companies, IT vendors, and representatives from science and research are working together as partners and for the use of all.”

Together we are stronger – You should benefit from this strength.

Yours sincerely,
Philipp Wibbing

New Members: Welcome to the Association!

Prostep ivip continues to grow: With Desktop EDA from Australia we intensified the internationalization of the association and were able to attract a new member. In addition, we were able to welcome Mitutoyo CTL Germany as a new member in May.

We cordially invite you and all the other members of the prostep ivip association to become actively involved with our projects!

You would like to get further information on our projects? Please don’t hesitate to contact us by phone or mail, we are happy to assist. Additional information is also available through our homepage

NAFEMS Expands Cooperation with LOTAR

NAFEMS, prostep ivip, PDES, Inc. and AFNeT on behalf of LOTAR and CAE-IF have signed a memorandum of understanding to cooperate in assisting Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) solution providers to accelerate the development and implementation of the Standard for the Exchange of Product model data (ISO 10303, usually referred to as STEP) to capture engineering analysis and simulation (EAS) information for long term archiving and retrieval (LOTAR).

The parties that have signed the MoU are organizations funded by member subscriptions that will continue to work together to:

  • Continue the outreach to CAE solution providers for collaboration in support of:
    • Developing additional features for the STEP AP209 interfaces that are underway and further defining recommended practices for their use
    • Validation of the STEP AP209 interfaces via the CAE-IF as they mature

  • Expand the LOTAR standards for simulation and analysis to include more technical domains and extensions of STEP or other industry standards for data exchange
  • Extend the industry outreach beyond aerospace and defense regarding LOTAR of EAS data via regional conferences, websites, publications, etc
  • Provide a means of communicating with representatives of CAE solution providers that are members of their respective organizations
  • Engage with technical working groups within each other’s organization
  • Collaborate in educating users and suppliers of LOTAR best practices for EAS data

LOTAR International is a project being conducted by leading OEMs and suppliers in the aerospace and defense industry under the joint auspices of ASD-STAN and AIA with the objective of developing, testing, publishing and maintaining standards for long-term archiving (LTA) of digital data, such as 3D CAD and PDM data.

The CAE Implementor Forum (CAE-IF) tests the interoperability of STEP files between different CAE software systems for performing CAE (such as FEA). The CAE-IF is based on the CAx Implementor Forum (CAx-IF) that has been in existence for nearly 20 yearsin testing interoperability of STEP files produced by translators for major CAD systems (e.g., AP203, AP242, etc.). PDES, Inc., prostep ivip and AFNeT represent a community of manufacturers, academia and government in supporting these forums and the LOTAR project. Initial efforts of the CAE-IF have focused on fostering the development of interfacesfor the ISO STEP AP209 edition 2 “Multidisciplinary analysis and design” standard.

VEC Day: Again an Integral Part of the 8th Vehicle Electric Systems Conference on September 26, 2019 in Landshut

The electric system of a modern vehicle is still one of the most underestimated components of the industry. It always has to adapt to current trends in the automotive industry. The requirements with regards to autonomous driving, functional safety, E-mobility, and increasing integration have a direct impact on the vehicle electric system, starting at the development phase.
In addition, it is one of the most difficult single component in the vehicle and due to considerable manual production efforts one of the most expensive. It connects all electric and electronic components in the vehicle and ensures the distribution of energy and information. Within the E/E architecture of the vehicle it becomes the backbone of each vehicle.

These issues reflect the key topics of the Vehicle Electric Systems Conference 2019, organized by the trade magazine Elektronik automotive with the support of prostep ivip and held on September 26, 2019 at the University of Landshut for the eighth time. At the VEC Day, for which prostep ivip is responsible, users and system providers will present solutions for an end-to-end digitization in the electric systems development.
