The international standard ISO 10303-242, better known as STEP AP 242, is a powerful standard for model-based product development. It was published for the first time in 2014 and is subject to ongoing further development. A technical corrigendum was published in 2016. A second edition will be published in early 2020. The prostep ivip Association's top priority is promoting the widespread use of ISO 10303-242 in industry and interoperability with other standards. The objective of the STEP AP 242 Maintenance project is to maintain the standard. From an organizational point of view, these activities are being performed within ISO TC184/SC 4. In this context, prostep ivip will focus on the suitability of the current functional scope for use in industry and the elimination of errors.
A second DIS document was prepared for the second edition of AP 242 and submitted for international voting. The AP 242 Maintenance project ensured that compatibility with existing implementations and recommended practices, which are created and implemented in the Association's various implementor forums, is maintained. Focus was placed on the areas product and assembly structure, kinematics and configuration management for the domain model. All the German comments were addressed appropriately during revision. Voting on the revised document was successful, which means that nothing now stands in the way of publi-cation as an international standard.
The AP 242 project group will continue to collect the requirements and feedback from AP242 implementation projects, check them against the standard, determine any resulting issues and develop solutions in close cooperation with the prostep ivip project groups MBx IF, CAx IF, PDM IF, STEP Benchmark, JT Workflow Forum and JT Implementor Forum. In keeping with a more agile approach (shortening the standardization process to 18 months), requirements relating to a third edition will be introduced. As far as prostep ivip is concerned, topics to be addressed include assembly PMI and issue management.
The activities for 2020 will also include participation in the corresponding work groups of the ISO and the 10303 5 Years Roadmap project.
