Business Value of IT Integration Projects is Measurable

Today, any investment made in an IT integration solution must be justified from an economic point of view – qualitative benefit alone is no longer reason enough. The purchase of new IT systems often has to compete with other investment plans being presented to executive management at the same time. Management executives therefore require a business value analysis as a basis for their decision making. Efficient methods and meaningful measurement criteria are needed to compare the quantitative benefit of IT integration projects with the costs involved.
The ProSTEP iViP Association, in cooperation with Siemens Business Services, has therefore developed a methodology for quantifying and qualifying the benefit offered by IT integration projects, i.e. their IT efficiency and IT effectiveness, in the “Business Value Analysis” project group. One-day, in-house workshops were held for interested Association members with the aim of validating the methodology and gaining initial practical experience with its use.
The methodology is adjustable to the respective demands of any company. It is not only suitable as a decision basis for investments. It is also possible to measure whether the assumed benefit has been achieve after the integration is completed. The methodology allows to consider IT efficiency and thus may be consulted to safeguard a company’s success.
The ProSTEP iViP Association is now offering a White Paper that describes the elaborated methodology. In addition it gives insights on how a business value analysis can be performed and it summarizes the experiences gained during the in-house workshops. The developed tool to perform a business value analysis of IT integration projects is available to all Association members.
