June 2006 - The Object Management GroupTM (OMGTM) and the ProSTEP iViP Association have agreed upon reciprocal membership. The objective of both organizations is – together with their members – to play a leading role in shaping information technology (IT). Therefore it was only a matter of time before the organizations’ common goals led to closer collaboration. Both organizations have dedicated themselves to supporting standards-based system interoperability and cross-enterprise integration throughout the entire product lifecycle, from planning to development and production, to maintenance.
At the end of 2004, the PLM Services developed within the framework of the ProSTEP iViP Association were accepted and published as a specification by the OMG. The OMG PLM Services constitute the first cross-platform, Model Driven Architecture® standard for the automotive industry. They facilitate the creation of real collaboration scenarios in the globally distributed engineering process on the basis of XML and have been already been implemented in a number of system solutions.
Reciprocal membership will allow the Association itself to submit standards. Up until now, e.g. in the case of the OMG PLM Services, submission could only be performed by third parties. The OMG is a non-profit organization that has committed itself to the development and maintenance of specifications for the IT industry. The best known OMG standards include CORBA®, UML® and Model Driven Architecture® (MDA®).
“If the results of work performed in the Association quickly become internationally accepted standards, this will ensure the success of the work conducted jointly by our members. The alliance with the OMG will play an important role in achieving this objective”, stated Alfred Katzenbach, Chairman of the Board of the ProSTEP iViP Association.
For Richard Mark Soley, Ph.D., Chairman and CEO of OMG, the advantages offered by this partnership are obvious: “The Object Management Group, Inc. (OMG) and ProSTEP iViP have a long-standing relationship, working together on such important standards as PLM Services. This new, even stronger relationship will ensure that the efforts of both groups will remain aligned, especially as both organizations move into the knowledge-based engineering arena. OMG, the owner of world-standard modeling methodologies in vertical markets, is delighted to strengthen our relationship with ProSTEP iViP, the leading product and knowledge engineering organization.”
In the future, the OMG and the ProSTEP iViP Association want to increase the level of collaboration between the two organizations and, together, press forward with innovative topics such as requirements management, digital manufacturing and knowledge-based engineering.
