OMG is a consortium founded in 1989 to develop manufacturer-independent, cross-system, object-oriented programming standards. Eleven companies originally set up the OMG, including IBM, Apple and Sun. Meanwhile, it has over 800 members and the standards set enjoy international recognition. The best known OMG developments are the Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA), which simplifies the creation of distributed applications in heterogeneous environments, and the Unified Modeling Language (UML), which enables the modeling and documentation of object-oriented systems in a standardized syntax. www.omg.org
