JT in ISO Standardization Process

August 2010 - Darmstadt - Lightweight 3D data, by communicating a subset of the more advanced CAx data definition, extends the reach of information traditionally locked in proprietary systems to applications such as Digital Mockup (DMU), simulation, design in context and simplified drawings. Right now, there is a broad application rate of JT in several branches – automotive, aerospace, defence, shipbuilding, mechanical and plant engineering etc. Thus, there is a huge global request in standardizing JT.

The publication of the JT Specification 8.1 as ISO PAS (Publicly Available Specification) was a first step. The next logical step is the publication of JT as ISO Standard. ProSTEP iViP and Siemens PLM Software are working hand in hand to make this happen.

ISO requires new International Standards begin with the definition of a balloted New Work Item Proposal. The JT ballot was issued on August 24th and is currently in circulation. (cp. SC4 N2625). To support the new work effort Siemens PLM Software has published an updated JT file format specification. The 9.5 JT File Format Specification will be brought forward through the ISO process as the new standard. The publication date of the first version of the ISO JT standard is planned for 2012.

The standardization of JT is a leap forward; JT standard activities will include a data correspondence to the relevant STEP Application Protocols (including the future AP 242 - the enhancement and combination of AP 203 and AP 214). It is planned to specify JT and AP 242 in a way, so that STEP and JT can be used effectively together for data exchange. Therefore, ProSTEP iViP plans to enrich STEP AP 242 by a powerful XML schema representation.

ProSTEP iViP follows the requirements of its members and supports the standardization of JT. Active JT-related projects are the JT Workflow Forum (JT WF), the JT Implementor Forum (JT IF) and the JT Translator Benchmark (JT BM). ProSTEP iViP provides a standard methodology for all projects driven by the Association.

ProSTEP iViP’s mission is to assure that solutions provided to its membership meet their requirements, fit together and are driven by standards.
