This quote from Henry Ford provides a perfect description of the motivation that has driven the ProSTEP iViP Association for over ten years. We provide our approximately 200 members with a platform upon which they can work together to shape communication in product development with the ultimate aim of facilitating successful collaboration in the manufacturing industry.

The Association gathers people who are facing the same challenges around one table. It creates a non-competitive environment in which these challenges can be met in a joint, coordinated effort. Where else can you find leading industrial enterprises – most of which are in competition with each other – IT solution providers and research institutes sitting down together in order to find uniform, harmonized solutions? This is the only way to secure investments and thus the success of a company over the long term.

The wide range of projects, workshops and conferences that we offer provides our members with an opportunity to exchange both experience and information. It is our members who introduce new fields of activity to the work performed within the Association. This means that the challenges being faced every day in product development can quickly be channeled into new projects, which in turn ensures that the Association involves itself with topics relevant to users.

Over the years, manufactures, suppliers and system vendors have worked together in this manner to create international standards, with the standardized data model STEP – Standard for the Exchange of Product Model Data – leading the way. STEP is an ISO standard which has established itself as the basis for data communication throughout the product development cycle. Today, the projects carried out by the ProSTEP iViP Association focus not only the data but also on the processes and systems involved and their efficient integration.
